because John Black is one of the most fascinating characters ever to appear on daytime television.

Whoever created him,(was it Sherrie Anderson) in the first place should be commmended. Here was a man who was literally stripped down to the bare essentials, no memories of his life, not even a name to go on. He had to re-create himself with nothing to go on. It was compelling drama. The story possibilities with a character like that were nearly endless.

As a vital part of his story, a timeless concept was illustrated. What could compassion and indeed love do to help this blank slate of a man figure who and what he is, while he searches for the past he believes will ground him. As it turns out, what he needed to ground him was love.

Drake was the perfect fit for the role, with that shock of dark hair and those piercing blue eyes. He was able to convey such strength at the same time as he revealed in some moments that John was terribly vulnerable and unsure of his place in the world. He grew into one of strongest heroes the genre has seen and became part of one of the most popular supercouples to grace our screens.

As much as I hated it at the time, when it turned out he wasn't Roman Brady after all, the door was opened for even more wonderful story telling. Some writers got it and some didn't. However, he and Marlena and their conflict with Stefano, were still the central focus of the show for a good ten years. When they had an interesting story to play out, the ratings were higher. Whenever the fan favorites like them were put in the background, the ratings faltered.

I think it's a shame that the most recent writing regimes have wasted the potential of this character. He could have been used to tie this Brady and Dimera "Vendetta" together in a way that is infinitely more watchable than the Sami and EJ snoozefest, without undoing all those years of rich history.

I wish these people would talk to real life fans in focus groups or something like them. They would see what is that we have been seeing all these years.

It's just sad that it would really take very little to fix this broken show.

Oh well,

I hope it's real and we get a few more special moments for John and Marlena to add to our collection of clips.
